that was going to be my response. i was a sophomore at 15, so something was a miss with that boy.

Not too off, but definitely at least a year behind. Depending on when your birthday is, a 14 year old 8th grader would be about the oldest you could get without being held back a year. My son's birthday is in November and he's 14/8th grade, never been held back a year and started kinder at 5.

We had a 10 year old take a tech 9 to school, given to him by his father, to take care of another kid a few years back. We find guns on 14-16 year olds all the time, well about once a year or so at the least. Not BB guns either.
