  • "You don't have any video games? You mean you don't have electricity?!"

My wife mentions to a 10 year old kid while he was playing his DS that we did not have any video games at home. The kid was so surprised.
"You dont have ANY video games at home?!?" "How can you not have video games, do you not have electricity?"

    <-palm to face.

It's very sad. That's the only thing these kids know.

I had knee surgery back in 2007 and spent a lot of time on the couch watching TV. I caught an old episode of "The Incredible Hulk" with Bill Bixby and it was the one where he worked in an arcade. This was back in the late 70's/early 80's when all they had was ski ball, pin ball, etc. I recorded the episode and watched or with my boys. They watched it and said how sorry they were I had such a bad childhood because technology was soo bad.

At first I laughed, but at a deeper level it's very very sad. I do feel sorry for kids today. Just like I feel bad for every Comic book store that goes out of business. I can't imagine my childhood fulfillment being defined by technology or any electronic devices.

Just like how I'm at a loss for words when I read those news stories of people dying from playing a game non-stop for three days with no food or water. It's beyond my comprehension.

We didn't have cable or video games until Robert and I moved in together. I'd be perfectly happy without either.
The kids did get 3DSs for Christmas, but they're very limited on playing time.

                hahaha

my kids have the psp, ds, wii, playstation. Bout only time they get touched is when friends sleep over or when weather is nasty or something for a few days and board games, legos and books are used.

Our neighborhood is kid central and i was surprised that all the kids that actually played outside and did things I did as a kid instead of glued to a tv or video game

I grew up with an NES and Super Nintendo. Didn't keep me from doing things outside until sundown. However, videogames now are so badass I could imagine being glued to them as a kid now.

I was at a park with my kids and watched as a bunch of kids were all hovering around one kid on a bench. Great weather, tons of open space and playground equipment to play on...and they were watching one kid play his Nintendo DS.

LEGOS used to be the genesis of creativity.

You have a pile of bricks, you created something from your mind.

Now, they have kits with detailed instructions like its some IKEA-kit-in-training.

If a parent wants to buy that 6 ft long LEGO Star Destroyer? Great! here's the legos (dumped in a pile) and heres the instructions (shredder). Have fun!

Woe be to the kid who has their imagination stifled. Let them loose on a 4 ft pile of sand with their GIJoe's and Tonka trucks and you won't hear a peep out of them all day.
