I thought kids had to be 13 to stay at home alone. We just started to let my son stay home but we also live in nowheresville. With what happens today any younger someone would call CPS.

There is no law regarding minors being alone, or being with other minors unsupervised.
Well, master of intelligence. Refute my opinion then.
You don't punish good behavior. You can't say, "Hey, here's some freedom, enjoy it for a year or two." Then, retract it in a preemptive strike to avoid unwanted behavior. You're pretty much saying, "I trusted you for a while, and you haven't given me any reason NOT to trust you, but I'm going to redact that trust clause, because kids are inherently bad."
That's an act of rebellion waiting to happen. Ask me how I know.

Yeah, I understand. It was more sarcastic in saying that it should be avoided if possible.

Sarcasm doesn't register in script, especially when one is trying to argue that he's entitled to give parenting advice from the other end of the spectrum.
FWIW, I grew up with a parent that was always home when I came home from school, as was my high school boyfriend. From experience, I can attest that having a parent in the house AND having a rule that the boyfriend wasn't allowed in my room didn't deter us from having sex (or from my flashing Robert his first in the flesh tits). It just turned the situation into a challenge accepted.
Drugs and alcohol weren't an issue, because neither of those fit with my personality. My parents are still convinced that I was the wild child who experimented with everything under the sun, but are pretty sure I didn't have sex until I graduated.
