Call the state Parks and Wildlife, I was told they have a list of land owners that let people hunt hogs for free. Never looked into it myself so post up if you're successful.

Agreed, if you shoot immediately behind the ear, it severs their spinal cord. They have a lot of meat/muscle above and below, so it has to be a clean shot immediately behind the ear. No "rambo" shots as you will just wound them and make them die a painful death.

And while I am in all agreeance that they are a menace, no creature deserves multiple hits in non-vital areas.

My family (essentially I, because no one else cares) own land up in Sherman, but Hogs are creatures that tend to want three things in their environment (which helps tracking/finding them easier)

                1) Water source with shallow entry so they can "wallow" to cover the insects/parasites on them and suffocate them in the mud.
                2) Trees so they can rub this mud (and thus the parasites) off once drying (they especially like Creatine covered poles/trees)
                3) Thick brush so they can bed down for the night

My land has none of these, so I have not had the opportunity other than a single sow crossing my land into the neighbors land (which I could not pursue)

Best bet is corn in a obvious movement path (ground all beat down with hoove marks), sit up in a tree downwind with a red flashlight (bright light startles them) and just wait for the "grunting" sound.

                Light em up.

If you guys need help, my .308 is always willing to lend a fireball or two for the cause.

Edit: One other thing that is essential for hog hunting is patience. Don't expect to show up and just hundreds pour out and it's a target rich environment. You have to hunt, bait, wait THEN shoot.

yup, that's why they call it hunting and not killing

You'd be surprised at how many people think it's a show up and shoot kind of gig.

Have yall checked into the river bottums over on 175 between seagoville and crandall. Also over on 80 south of ray hubbard spillway. I would also look into the river over by rowlett rd I think is where its at on 20. All those spots are prime pig realestate. They might be public areas also. You can also contact the local game wardens through the fish and game office. They can turn you on to someone who will let you hunt their place. If the warden thinks you will be responsible they will usually vouch for you to the land owners. Thats how we got all of our spots here in west tx.

If and when you find a spot, cherry coolaid on deer corn for about a week is the magical pig food. Put that out for a few nights in a row and you will have them hooked.

Never used cherry but I use strawberry most all the time. Also what is really good is diesel fuel in the corn. I mix a 5 gallon bucket of corn with about 3/4 cup of fuel. The hogs love the sweet smell, and all the other critters will not eat it. Saves ya on feeding all the other critters.

Pig pipe works well too. I have one at my place in Cisco about 40 yards from my blind. Basically its a 4" PVC pipe filled with corn with holes in it so the corn will fall out when the pigs roll it around. 5 ft long on a 5 ft chain, chained to a t-post.

That's a good damned trick Wayne. Thanks.

Been out scouting three times in the last week. Actually had a clean shot the other day and when I squeezed the trigger, it was a dead click. Stupid assed cheap russian ammo! Dripped it back in the hole and it went bang the second time...
