I love this thread, guilty until proven innocent. If the police can't identify you then you must be guilty unless you give us all sorts of sensitive personal information.

Not at all. It depends on the totality of the circumstances. If you provide me all your legit ID information, then no sweat off my brow if you refuse SSN. If you can't produce ID and only verbally ID yourself, I'll dig a little deeper. BCOOP: I understand what you're saying, and won't argue that. Shame a few bad apples taint the rest of us.

I don't even necessarily mean that the LEO would do something with it, but it is a very real concern. I don't want anyone but my employer and my creditors having my SSN. Period. Triplicate copies get lost, files get lost, files get stolen, shit gets hacked. Why run the added risk?
You don't provide your physicians with it?

LE already has everyone's SSN who's been arrested for a class b or above, just FYI. It's not that tough to get it.

You mean the next officer? I can only speak for myself. Which is why I said what I did. It's a shame a few bad officers have made the rest of us look bad.

You say that like it matters. The most important thing to me is what the worst guy on your force is going to do.

The odds of coming across a bad cop is much lower than coming across a good cop. I'm very proud of what I do. I understand I'll never change your minds on this topic, I'm just telling you guys how *I* operate. I can honestly tell you though, our admin has an iron fisted grip on it's patrol officers, and allows NO margin of error. The PD would much rather ax an officer than pay out a suit.

Edit: Another reason I read this board so much is because I learn what you guys do/dont want. It helps me be a better officer.

What I want is to not have a sobriety test when I get pulled over after an all day and nighter.

I agree, but it's the nature of the beast. And like I said, it's really more about back end that concerns me. How many court clerks see/handle/prcoess that information. What if a ticket tablet were lost? One of the triplicate forms fell out, etc.

We use the electronic writers that run on windows that are electronically uploaded. They also have the field for SSN, but we don't really fill that field in.
