If there is a warrant with the same name, or a SOUNDEX hit, then the SSN is used to confirm or deny that it is the correct person.
For all of you that would refuse to give it, you're just giving the officer a reason to haul you in and have you fingerprinted. All the while your car is towed.
What if you don't know it? I don't carry my card, nor do I have the number memorized. I never figure on needing it outside of a job. I do have my passport number if that helps lol.

How does an adult not know their ss#? I never understood that.

Some agencies still require the SSN listed on the citation as additional form of ID. Not that big of deal, really. If you have a complaint, go file a complaint in person at the officers agency.

I don't know, just never really had a reason to memorize it. The only times I have ever needed it was applying for a job and when I was in the hospital.
With identity theft as common as it is, I think it's a real concern. I'm not giving an LEO my social, I don't care what the reason is. If that means going to jail because he wants to be a cock sucker, so be it.

My old agency had a field for the ssn. Whenever it was refused I simply wrote "refused" in that field and moved on if I already had person identified. Here's the catch as stated above. Whenever there's a warrant hit issued by an agency on a sound-alike, there's usually a SSN attached to it. The officer probably noticed a hit return and wanted to verify this was/was not the same person. Thinking the police will steal your identity is tinfoil hat-ish as it is. If a person has ever been arrested before, that persons SSN is already attached to his criminal history anyway... So not sure what the big deal is.

I've caught people for "Fail to ID-fugitive" when they verbally told ms their names and everything checked out - until I ran their social. The number came
Back to another person with pretty serious warrants. (on several occasions) again, this is only a tool to further ID people.

Right, because LEO's never do anything illegal. They don't plant evidence, they don't drive drunk, they don't beat their wives, and the list goes on. If you think your bretheren are above that, you're naive as they come.
I don't even necessarily mean that the LEO would do something with it, but it is a very real concern. I don't want anyone but my employer and my creditors having my SSN. Period. Triplicate copies get lost, files get lost, files get stolen, shit gets hacked. Why run the added risk?
