I get the cheap shit, Jack/Crown/Makers only because I will polish off a .750 in a good night or two. Cost equals about the same as a 30 pack that would last the same amount of time.....
If I'm drinking all night, say at the bar, I stick to vodka most of the time. Cheap vodka is a lot easier on the head and body the next day, than cheap whiskey. At dinner, having a couple of drinks, I'll have a more expensive whiskey. At home drinking all night with friends, a mid grade whiskey with ginger ale, stand by is jameson. But if I'm just having a drink or two at home afterwork, I'll dip into the more expensive stuff.

Woodford or Makers 46 are my favorites lately, but if you're gunna throw soda in it no need to waste decent whiskey just go get some Jim or Jack.

I typically throw some sprite/7 in with my crown. I'm heading back.. Let me clarify, they don't sell liquor the day after a holiday, if said holiday falls on a Sunday... To the liquor store tonight to see what is available out here in the sticks. I may try some knob creek or makers mark. Hopefully something that is an upgrade from what I am acustomed to at the bars i have visited (basic crown, makers, knob creek)

I finally treated myself to a bottle of Knob Creek single barrel reserve for Christmas and it's been tasty so far.

I went with Knob Creek this time. I don't think its the single barrel reserve, still, pretty good stuff so far
