From what I understand a patent pending is what a person wants to protect there product and themselves. Honda had a patent pending on the horizontal single's like the trail 50, 70, 90 etc. When it ran out, the china pitbike market and little cruiser market went hot with the motor copies.

Patent pending means the patent has been applied for but is going through the review process.

Mailing to yourself is a pretty weak defense for patents. If inventor B invented the same idea with out knowledge of inventor A and patents it before Inventor A does. Then Inventor B will win any violation suits as B was the first to file even if A invented the years before.

Mailing to yourself for copyright, hold more ground

snopes is correct it doesn't establish copyright, but the mail can establish a time line that can used as evidence. EX Author writes a book, sends to publisher who publishes under a different author and title. The Author can then prove that the was written before the publisher stated and and dispute any claims.
