SANTAQUIN -- Even after telling his friends on Facebook that a Lamborghini would soon be his, David Dopp, a resident of Santaquin, couldn't believe it when his lanyard number actually matched the winning card at the BYU vs. Idaho football game last month. And Dopp was still in shock when the Maverik Inc.'s 18-month "Joe Schmo to Lambo" contest representatives presented him with the lime green Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster LP640 at the Santaquin Maverik on Saturday.
"I couldn't even believe it when my number matched," Dopp said. "I was speechless and didn't even know what to say. If my body would have let me I would have done back flips down the field."
Dopp entered the contest about 18 months ago. He is a member of the company's Adventure Club Card program and set up a user account on Maverik's site and opted-in to the contest. Dopp didn't think anything more about the contest until he received a phone call in November 2010 letting him know that he was finalist No. 2.
Contest participants racked up entries every time they used their Maverik Adventure Club Card. A few finalists qualified for the promotion through teamgive, which partnered with Maverik in the contest and is a nonprofit organization committed to participating in and sponsoring charitable community events to help raise money, support and awareness for kids with rare neurological diseases.
Dopp also received a $4,000 prize package from Miller Motorsports Park, where he will receive driving lessons. All of the other finalists also received prizes including packages to the Motorsports Park.
The Lamborghini has been on tour for the past 18 months traveling through the nine western states where Maverik operates.
"It has been a lot of fun to be a part of this contest and be around this car," said Ernie Harker, Maverik's executive director of marketing. "After talking with many of Dave's family and friends, this car couldn't have gone to a more decent guy. He is one who will really appreciate the prize."
"Being able to interact with the winners has been great," said Jim York, Maverik promotions manager. "To see that this car can change someone's life has been an exciting thing to be a part of."
The other finalists included Mitch Oldroid, Kim Rappleye, Blake Roberts, Lurree Ferguson, Kaitlyn Hoge, Lucille Knight, Steve Pope, Ron Ringel and Lee Bailey.
"I am still in shock," said Annette Dopp, Dave's wife. "I still can't believe this car is parked in our driveway."
