  • who works for union pacific here? re: san antonio hiring session

I know we had some guys on here that work for them. I was invited to the hiring session this coming weds. I had some questions for the current board employees if they are around. What work shifts do the train crews work? 8 on/7 off? what will/can you make realistically first year? Benefits/time-off decent?
I ask this because next weds is a big day at work and being fairly new it would be a massive black eye for me to miss (call-out) so I am trying to determine if UP is worth sealing my fate at my current employer to pursue.

You're about to be rich son!!!!!

Sign up for the forum and you'll get a lot of good info.
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

      LoL

Try on call 24/7 365 days a year. Phone rings and you have two hours to get to work. No set days off. You want off call in sick.

depends what you are being interviewed for , if you are being interviewed for a trackman truck driver position there is alot of trvaveling working 8 days 12 hours a day plus ot. and 57dlls perdiem pay regardles if you work or if you are off you still would get paid , aside from your hourly pay of 21.00 ,its hard work flipping metal plates and ,out of that 12 hour shift you would work at the most 6 hours the rest of the time you would spend it sitting on the UP bus,But those 6 hours of work are hard . When you recieve your first pay check it motivates you to work harder .

My dad worked for UP for 40 years and loved every minute of it. Wish he was still around, would love to work for them now.

If you get hired on for train crew you're not gonna work shift work for years and years. All of the old heads(guys with 20+ years have seniority and they take the shift work). Your on call 24/7. You'll work holidays, weekends, in any weather conditions, etc.. Most of the time Ill have to be away from home every other day in a hotel room in some city that I dont know anybody in. Iv talked to several different conductors that work with UP and have read almost every page of getarailroadjob.com . I think I know exactly what Im getting into so I applied and now I start on Jan 2. I think Ill really enjoy it. I like working outdoors, in adverse weather conditions, around heavy machinery, in dangerous conditions, and being in a hotel will give me time for things like reading, working out, and taking some online classes.
Try talking to guys that work for UP and search online. There's videos on youtube about the lifestyle also. UP is a great company with great benefits and great pay. But it's a much different job than most people have ever had. If you have any questions Im sure Dewayne6243 or FreightTrain will answer them for you. Both of those guy have helped me tremendously and answered every question Iv had. They both like to stir the pot on the board but both of them are good guys that were willing to help me out even though I'm a complete stranger to both of them. Iv done a lot of research and have gotten pretty well versed with the hiring process. Let me know if you have any questions.
