Those with highly modded "street cars", how do you handle insurance?

PLEASE get a stated policy. I do appraisals every day and unless you have one, most of the time you dont even get a fraction of the money in aftermarket parts youve put into it. Sometimes its sickening, lol. Luckily, alot of the heavily modded cars already have a state policy and the insurance company is just making sure its not under-valued.

What insurance company do you have now?

The more you want covered, or the more valuable you make the car to the insurance company the higher your premiums are going to be. What are the chances of getting hit in 1800 miles per year? Not near as great as your daily vehicle. And I'm betting you aren't driving it in heavy traffic, or leaving the car in areas of higher crime(auto theft). That said, personally I wouldn't be able to justify spending all that extra on almost fully covering versus carrying liability on the car since even if you were in an accident it would most likely be cheaper to pay to fix the car out of pocket than how much you've paid into your insurance premiums for full coverage and then pay a deductible on top of that to get the car fixed.

If you go the liability only route, have a great lawyer(evil, rotten, nasty, baby eating, visious type) on your speed dial.Several large insurance co (AAATEXAS For one) simply ignore any facts about accident and blame you. If you dont have f/c on your car your insurance cant do anything to help. Learned this the hard way, went f/c on my f150. Mustang will need baby killer if it gets hit. good luck.

I have been just running around with Progressive Liability only @ $160/6mnth. Seems a little steep for a liability only pleasure vehicle that is worth next to nothing based on the model (1979 coupe) and since it's just liability they wouldn't pay anything anyway.

You could get 30k worth of coverage and probably 7500 miles a year for that much a month. That is what I had on my 2006 vette for $30 a month.

Just because an insurance company says there is a certain mileage you can drive a year doesn't mean you have to stick with it and only drive it lets say 4k. I don't recall ever being asked the mileage on my cars other than the time I made the account.

They don't actually confirm the mileage when you give it to them initially, so you can give yourself a little cushion when you give them the mileage at the beginning of the policy. I don't even come close to the mileage limits so it has never been a concern for me.
