  • Those with highly modded "street cars", how do you handle insurance?

With my coupe getting closer to being back on the road I really have to tackle this insurance thing. As some know, it's a '79 coupe (factory v8 car) that has been converted interior and exterior to the 93 stuff. Custom paint, all new glass, body panels, lights, carpet, headliner, dash, door panels, everything is pretty much new. Car has a fuel injected GM LQ9 (6.0L) w/a T6 S475 Borg Warner turbo. Built trans/converter by Mikes trickshift, built rear, frnt/rear Aerospace brakes, tubular everything front and rear, big fuel system (aeromotive elminator), pro-stars. Car is tagged/inspected, has A/C and heat, radio, locking doors, etc. Car has a custom 10point cage painted with the exterior, racing Corbeau seats, 5point harnesses, manual flaming river steering, manual aerospace brakes, and a spool (and runs around on ET street's).

So, with that said, it is probably not the best candidate for an insurance policy. I drove the car about 1800 miles last year and I assume I'll drive about that each year. I have Kim looking for a policy for it, but wanted to know what everyone else is doing on their heavily modified street cars (especially older cars, this car is almost 33 years old). I feel like I need an agreed value policy in order to avoid getting screwed if someone pulls out in front of me or steals it one day and it's a total loss. Too much money tied up in it to risk it with all the morons on the road.

those specialized policies tend to be very wordy, either way you will get fucked. unless its newer and holds a lot of value I suggest regular liability and part it out if shit happens. You won't get paid dick if its wrecked anyway.

Ya, I looked into a policy and one of the terms on it was I could NEVER drive it to work or on any errands (i.e. to the grocery store or coffee shop). Basically I was limited to taking it to/from car shows. I don't plan to drive it to work, but occasionally going to grab something at the store in it or make a stop for a bite to eat, etc.

it is amazing how many car groups there are that you could be "wanting to attend for the first time" or even you were trying to start a car group/show.

i was on my way to a "car show" when i wrecked mine....
          first class white trash

              we have a winner.

Besides, doesn't someone ask you about the car, or make the usual "nice ride" comment. So what if it's a one car show, it's the thought that counts.

Stated Value is the only way to go. My policy required the car be parked in the garage, be driven less than 5k miles a year and some other bs I can't remember.

one thing you can do is if you you know someone at a dealership you could have them appraise it for what you have in it or what you want out of it. take that to your insurance people and the can file it with your paperwork. that way all the mods and work can be covered. i was told by my agent about that because i had more in my '98 than it was worth.

I use Hagerty Insurance for my Nova SS. I have it covered under an antique car policy and it casts next to nothing. I did a quick check and it looks like they may offer what you want.

I have the 69 insured with south and western I don't recall having restrictions on where I can take it just how many miles a year (6,000) and it has to be stored indoors and not a daily driver. I think it is around $15 a month, they also insured my 06 vette when I had it on the same type of policy and it was $30 a month or so. They call it a collectors car policy.

This. Get an appraisal and go from there.
