Its not like places actually make money off of oil changes. Id say on 90% of the oil changes that come through my shop we lose $5 to $10 on average and sometimes more. An oil change is just a service that we offer to keep traffic flow through the shop.

For once I agree with the hippies. Changing your oil every 3000 miles is obviously unnecessary, and people need to know this. It's always been some sort of conspiracy between oil companies and lube shops to keep uneducated consumers in the dark about this. And people are really bitching about lube shops losing money? LOL! That's like bitching about Phillips losing money because their scheme to have people change out light bulbs every 100 hours is being foiled.

There's got to be ton of cars on the roads that don't contain them. Tons of people don't use synthetics. Tons of people also use the cheapest oil and filters they can get.
Sure, oil and filter technology has progressed from 30 years ago, but I think you're discounting the amount of less than intelligent people out there. How many people drive shitboxes, 30 yr old cars, etc.
I don't see where the govt gets off intervening and affecting small business revenue. I also think liability is an issue. I think the manufacturers should push it, not the govt. 3k mile intervals isn't hurting anyone.
As for my intelligent response, my first post on the subject was just that.
My real point is that this will not hurt the economy because people will spend elsewhere. It also wont affect lube shops at a magnitude greater than 15%. and mostly...I don't believe in supporting a business that has only been getting the amount of business they have because of misinformation about change intervals. They are the ones deceiving people...and you hit the nail on the head when you mention the amount of clueless people out there. Anytime I've actually gotten my oil changes they've slapped a 3K sticker regardless of my increased interval.

And if you wanted to change your oil at 3k you couldn't. The proposed mandate would take freedoms, make life more expensive, lose jobs, and cause other states to pay for it. I don't support the idea.

Let's say John Q. Public gets 4 oil changes a year @ $40 a pop = $160 total. Now he realizes he doesn't need to do that so cuts it down to 2 a year. The net difference is $80 that he is saving. Now he will take that $80 he saved and go spend it on something else and the govt will get their cut of that revenue. The govt will be getting their share no matter what.
Worst case scenario, the lube shop makes a little less money and lays off a oil change monkey who will just go find another unskilled position (positions created by increased spending in other segments thanks to the extra money in John Q. Public's pocket).
If anything, we'd be sending less money to oil rich nations since we wouldn't have to import as much oil and keeping it here in our country. One could argue this would HELP our economy.

It's a good thing they came out with that recycled oil. That will be a God send to the State of California. I can see it now, every street corner there will be a guy with a crescent wrench, a scissor jack, an aluminum baking pan from Walmart, and some milk jugs full of old oil trying to get people to let them change their oil in the parking lot of Big Lots.

I will spend the extra money as insurance.
