Another X-Ford tech, around 15 years of it.
You will hate working on your hot rod in about 5 years, about that time your back/muscles will start going away. Stress from no money around this time of year (well, all year!) Saturday till 5:00 while your buds are out having fun.
BUT, if you barely made it out of high school, can't find anything else that will pay more than $12.00 an hour, go for it!
I quit and went to DriveTime (used cars) payed by the hour, NO trucks bigger than 1/2 ton, basically easy work, good benefits/insurance, no stress, over 4 weeks off each year, 6:00-3:00 M-F..... And I would still do something else if I was smart enough!sigpic

I work as a mechanic for a fleet company so its a little different, but if its something you were considering doing that I would go for it and see where it takes you. Luckily i don't have to deal with bitching customers and having to get approval to do a job and i get played hourly so i don't worry about our slow days. Its a way to get your foot in the door and see if its something you may want to do. I have a buddy of mine that works for park place lexus in grapevine, which is the dealership I thinking you're talking about, and loves it there, but has the same complaints as any other mechanic you will run into. There are plenty of times that I wish i would have gone into something other than mechanic work, but for the most part i love my job and the people i work for.Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely, in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting “Holy shit, what a ride!”

I am going with the other techs on here and say run away from Lexus. Granted, I have only been doing it since 2004 but I know exactly how these guys feel and know what they are saying. You will more than likely be on commission which really sucks from November until March since you will be twiddling your thumbs for the most part. You will be starving yourself to death, not knowing how much you are going to get paid on payday, tool bills out the ass, etc.
I worked at the Ford and Nissan dealership here for five years and worked at a body shop for the last year and half as a tech, estimator, and light duty body man. The stress of not making money during the slow times was not worth it to me since I have a wife and two little ones to feed but when work is good, so is the money. Just save every little red cent you have during the good times to compensate for the bad. Your back, shoulders, hands, feet, etc will hurt everyday while working on cars after you have been doing it for a few years. If you decide to do it, gain the knowledge and quit turning wrenches and become a service advisor once you have done it for a few years.
Once you work on cars for a living, you will hate working on your own cars, your friends cars, even looking for car parts for your car. You will have no life working on cars because you will either be working like a slave trying to make that dollar or too damn broke to do anything. If I were you, I would run away. I wish I did when I was your age but I threw in the towel (I guess in this case, the shop rag) for the last time last week. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Just do it dude, the potential is there to make gobs more money than you will ever dream about sticking with Vatozone.
Once again, I don't have one complaint about the "Lexus" service side... Other car companies... well, that's another story.

Just curious guy. How old are you and how long you been doing this? I would love to bookmark this thread and look you back up in 5 years and see what your attitude is then.
91coupeMike, listen to all the guys that have been in this business for more than 8-10 years. Read what they all have said. Better yet ask some of the older guys at any dealership you can.
This reminds me of a funny short story. One day at the dealership Lincoln tech was parading a bunch of highschool age kids thru the shop showing them things on some sort of field trip. All of us were yelling " don't do it " and " go back to school " and stuff. LOL.

I have been in the business for just over 10 years. I understand it is taking a toll on my body but the money, to me, is worth it. As I mentioned earlier, this career is not for everyone. I, personally, am very happy even though I get a workout every day of my life....
It's all about working efficiently, not hard...
