acids produce a good smoke but are really just a flavored cigars. think south dallas...
start with padron 3000 or oliva "v" series. each smoke has never let me down... once you advance from the 3000 goto the 7000 maduro (pretty much everything i smoke is maduro). also look into a romeo y julieta reserve too those aren't too shabby. i am a big fan of cain's and nub's but they are going to be a little stronger if you are new and like mild. another good one i recently got for a good deal is the padilla miami limitada.
all of the ones i listed can be had for under $8 all day long. i goto up in smoke on mckinney ave near uptown and they seem to have the best prices. i also remember a place out in rowlett near the lake that i believe was called "the box" that had really good prices too if you're out east.
