If you're planning to speak French in France, be sure you speak it well. They get very aggravated at Americans speaking their language poorly.
In classic DFWMustangs oneupsmanship, I've seen the actual Rosetta Stone on display at the British Museum. Pretty awesome. When the government pays, the government controls.

I took 6 years of Spanish in Middle/High School and never became even remotely fluent. I would always try to translate to English in my head first and then process or speak it. As a result, I never could pick up any speed.
Rosetta Stone really works the same way a child learns a langauge - you see a picture and you associate the picture with the word. I don't try to translate German to English in my head. When I see "Der vogel ist rot" (The bird is red) I actually picture the exact fucking red bird from Rosetta Stone. Same for all the other vocab. Kind of creepy, but it works.
With that said, I didn't pay a dime for it so I guess anything free is impressive.- Darrell

"Soldiers in Napoleon's army discovered the Rosetta Stone in 1799 while digging the foundations of an addition to a fort near the town of el-Rashid (Rosetta). On Napoleon's defeat, the stone became the property of the British under the terms of the Treaty of Alexandria (1801) along with other antiquities that the French had found."When the government pays, the government controls.

I didn't know they took it from him.
