it depends on what temp they start at and how long they're plugged in.

generally don't have to plug in a Cummins in TX. You can, and it's nice to have heat sooner, but not something I'd say is necessary.

if you watch the pyro on a diesel in cold weather, the exhaust temps will be below 200* at first... you combine low combustion temps with a huge cooling system designed for keeping a SUSTAINED 300-400hp cool, and it takes a LONG time to idle a diesel up to a warm state. cold idling contributes to ring and cylinder wear and can cause wet stacking

getting them under load ASAP yields far less wear on the engine, and there's nothing worse for a DPF equipped engine than excessive idle time!

Far better to put some load on it (drive it) and let it warm up that way

Just to answer a question about the remote start law....I think it doesn't really matter if its legal or not...it depends on how dumb the person writing the ticket is and if its worth your time to fight it in court...EVEN THOUGH I'm quite sure you would win. My mothers friend bought a new Ford SUV/crossover thing about a month ago and while at a restaurant in Dallas she started it up while paying the bill to get the heater going and when she walked outside a meter reader/parking cop told her it was illegal to leave a vehicle running unattended or with the keys in the ignition. Her friend explained to the dipshit that SHE HAD THE KEYS, and that if anyone tried to open a door, change a gear, etc etc..that the engine would immediately kill and the alarm would go off. He didn't care..wrote her a ticket anyway and told her to "tell it to the judge". No offense to the LEO's on here...but really?

I have remote started my junk since 1994. No problems. I have never had a customer tell me they got a ticket for having their car remote started. The whole idea behind the law is to prevent someone from driving off in your car while running, unattended, with the key in the ignition.

fuck letting the car sit on a cold start, all the beaners meet up at my place, once they're all outside we jump in the truck and drive off. No letting it sit at idle or anything. With the body heat from all the Mexicans it warms up pretty quick.. Carpul FTW!

I let the Porsche warm up even in warmer weather...I don't take off until the temp gauge gets up to the bottom mark.

Everything else ussually just gets a min or 2 and then I'm heading out, although they are all garaged so never that cold anyway....except for the old truck, and it HAS to warm up alot before it's going anywhere....at least until I get that new engine put in.

I'm pretty new to diesels, so I didn't know it was bad to let them idle when they're cold.

I do know that mine runs like dog shit if I don't let it warm up on cold mornings. Once it's warm, it runs great.

7.3's and 6.0's are cantankerous when cold... I'd plug the truck in while cold outside, but I wouldn't idle it more than a few minutes. Just long enough for it to not sound like it's going to fall apart.

My neighbor idles their 6.0 every morning for a good half hour. The "this thing's gonna blow!" sound goes away after a couple/few minutes it seems

I hear talk of plugging them in, but if mine has a plug, I haven't seen it.

you just need the cord. your engine already has the heating element in it. You can get one on ebay for $15-20. a good truck supply should have one.

Makes a HUGE difference on the HEUI engines! I would definitely get one if I were you.

We had to plug in that truck in that we took to Colorado. Obviously we found out that particular truck did not like the cold. lol
