XS for the money is ok. But is a cheaper lower end model. I would pay a little more to have a camera you will keep; instead of the cheaper one and always wanting to upgrade. Take it from me. I keep getting the mid level cameras when I really need to get a PRO level camera to be fully happy.

Paul. I have a nikon d40 I used back in college. Great camera. I can bring it to mikes next Thursday if you want to mess with it some. IMO though, unless you use the manual functions, you aren't even using the camera to it's full potential and would be better off with a point and shoot. It's not hard to learn. Just gives you different options on how you won't your photos to turn out.
I could give you some tips but the best way to learn is to get out there and shoot a ton of pictures and play around with it.Last edited by Super Coupe; 12-09-2011, 01:09 PM.

I have a D3100 and I think it's a great camera. That said, there is nothing wrong with the T2i, it is a really good entry level camera as well.
Here are a couple of things that might may a difference for you from both sides.
The D3100 has continuous auto focus when recording. I know you said you were wanting to take some pictures of your son and if you're like me you'll want to use the video recording as well. Not too worry with the D3100, it will auto focus continuously while your son is running around playing, etc. The one thing I didn't like about the D3100 was with the 18-55mm lens that it comes with, it doesn't have an auto focus motor. That said, that lens is basically only good if your target is 10' or less from you anyway, so I had every intention of spending the extra $100 on the 55-200m lens, which I did get. The 55-200mm lens has the auto focus motor on it so now unless I want to use manual mode I don't have to worry about focusing, ever. Plus I have the capability to reach out and touch someone and actually see detail in the image and not just grainy noise bullshit.
The T2i has a little higher resolution display screen, but honestly I didn't see a big advantage there as I'm using the camera to save the images/video recordings, not to look through the pictures on the camera display. The T2i does have a built in auto focus motor lens on it right out of the box, which is a plus. It also has more mexapixels which will provide slightly higher image resolution, which is also a plus.
That's really the biggest pro's and con's that I think really will make the difference for you from what you described as far as what you're going to be using the camera for. You can't make a wrong decision between the 2 of those, IMHO. Good luck.

Without getting into a bunch of detail that no one probably cares about just know that the higher the class the more expensive the SD card is going to be, but for the average user something like a class 6 4gb or 8gb SD card will be more than sufficient and will only be around $10-15. You can get the class 10, but unless you really know what you're looking at you may wind up spending more for a SD card labelled as class 10 that has class 6 speed.
