But studying religions has been a hobby of mine for many years, I like to know about the different religions and the reasoning behind why people choose them. It's fascinating really.

And of course my brother in law is Israeli-American, born in Israel, Jewish in race and religion, and one of my best friends is Canadian Jew. So I've had quite a few interesting talks with both of them about their religions.

Actually, being Jewish is a race and a religion.

Real Jews are born Jewish, both in religion and in race, when their mother is of true Jewish descent. Women can not officially convert by joining the church and become truly Jewish and have Jewish (race) offspring, only offspring of true female descendents of Judea and the Israelites can birth Jews (race). The only true Jews are the descendents of Judea and the Israelites by blood. These would be a race of Jews.

Those that practice Judaism as a religious following are also Jewish and called Jews, but only in the sense of the religion, not the race. Those that convert to Judaism, are Jewish in religious terms only. And only the non-orthodox churches allow conversion. They are not considered to be true Jews by the orthodox church or by the race. A lot of times you'll hear them referred to as converts or, gers and giyorets.
