Then when they are educated on how to solve the unwanted (yet perfectly natural) behavior, they want to spout off the usual idiotic response of "I don't have time", because they realize that having a pet with a high energy level takes effort. What a fucking shock!? If you don't have the time to meet the needs of a herding breed get a fucking Chihuahua. Or better yet, don't have an animal at all, because you obviously are more concerned about your needs than theirs, even though they helplessly depend on you. And don't give me this "I did a good thing by 'saving' this dog from a horrible lifestyle" bullshit, you merely provided a slightly less shitty condition for this poor animal. Don't expect a fucking pat on the back... asshole.

My pit bull kept digging under my fence and trying to get out. I bought one of those wireless fences and put it about a foot away from my wooden fence and it works great.

Perhaps you could engage the use of a doggie daycare that offers playtime with other dogs or a dog walker to supplement your lack of time. I realize these suggestions may not be convenient or financially appealing. Maybe you should do some research on the needs of the breed you decide to have in the future, instead of not providing for the dog's inherited qualities and then punishing them for it...
Go hug a root bitch. The dog is getting fed and cared for.

Seems she has been educating the OP as to the inherent characteristic traits of his dog. That his need to find work and be more active is bred into him. Possibly trying to elude to the fact that even if he can cure the escaping problem, he could develop other destructive habits still in search of more activity.

While your ignorance is amusing, I truly wish I had the opportunity to demonstrate my castration techniques to you.. sans anesthetic protocol. At least then we'd be assured that you wouldn't have the ability to poison the population with your mediocre genetic material.

I'm saying that a backyard in the country with no outside means of mental and physical exercise to the requirements that a BC needs, and then being punished for acting out is ridiculous. If he can't provide what the dog needs, then so be it, but don't punish the dog for his shortcomings as an owner.

However, if you don't agree with the points I made, perhaps you'd be interested in this statement, taken directly from the AKC website:

"The workaholic of the dog world, the Border Collie is the world’s premier sheep herder, prized for its intelligence, extraordinary instinct and working ability. This high-drive breed is extremely energetic and requires exercise beyond just a walk around the block or a romp in the yard. " But hey, fuck those assholes.. they don't know shit about dogs compared to you guys!
This is not my first border collie nor is it our families first border collie. My wife's uncle actually breed's them and this is where our dog started her life. He has never seen any of his dogs this hyper whether they are stuck in the kennel for a few days or not.

We are not trying to punish her for her instincts but we are trying to keep her safe and also respect the people who own the farm. She has chased a car out of the farm onto the main road more than once and we can not have this going on especially when we are at work. The dogs are smart enough to be trained to act right and obey. If it was up to me and she did not chase cars, I would let her roam the farm all day.

Maybe no dog should ever go to obedience school or be trained to harness their instincts as hunting dogs are?

Maybe we should go buy a sheep to put in our yard and I will quit my job, get a cloak and staff and walk around like Jesus as my dog herds the sheep in the yard.

Just out of curiosity, how many BC's have you romped, I mean had as pets?

She is inside a lot and well behaved inside but she does enjoy being out and does have to use the bathroom.

exactly as I thought...not a vet. Secondhand knowledge mostly lifted from google. And keeping a dog safe isn't punishing it. If you're gonna try and pull that shit you need to realize that dogs weren't always domesticated. And that dog has plenty of room to get exercise. That stupid article you posted is more for suburbanites like myself. Guess what, my dogs google article says the same thing, but her 2 walks a day are more than she could want. She prefers to just lay at my feet or side. I have to actually encourage her to play and exercise at times. Not all dogs are the same, and some dogs need a little more encouragement in the obedience department.

When she is 6 she is going to develop Lupus and have outbreaks if you let her stay in the sun for prolonged periods.

Our yard is pretty shady for the most part but thanks for the information. That is new to me. You have mentioned having border collies... how many have you had?
