  • Does anyone hunt on public land any more?

Seems like everyone I know either has a lease or has family land way out in BFE. Does anyone ever go to Crockett or Sam Houston forest to hunt?

There is actually quite a bit of it.

My buddy and his dad went out to Crockett opening weekend and he got a small 8 point.

3 years ago we were out at Crockett in the Neches Bluff area, when 2 rounds cracked over our heads, one of which hit the tree just to our right. We haven't been back out since. I think that most hunters are fucking stupid.

This I only trust hunting with a few people.

I do because COE land is walking distance from my folks place. I don't see many monsters but it's cool to take a deer with a bow, no bait, and sitting on the ground. Feels more like real hunting to me. I still hunt in a blind with a rifle too but public hunting can be fun too if it isn't over crowded.

I used to hunt around Aquilla in Hill County but it appears it is no longer a public hunt area from that map.

It wasn't bad at first when everyone stuck to the rules, but at the end I had assholes walking through brush in front of me wearing tan with white trim jackets tooting on deer grunters. Idiots.

Not worth catching some lead over. I prefer private land out in the middle of no where.

I plan on hunting public next year as there is a ton of it by Cooper and around the area. It is all bow hunting only so that takes out the risk of gun hunters taking you out. There is alot of nice public land out there with very few people hunting it..

When I hunted at Aquilla it was shotgun and muzzleloader only during regular rifle season, after seeing so many idiots out there with deer rifles, no hunter orange and flat-footing through the brush with machetes like they were on a fucking jungle safari I called it quits.
