I recently had to repair my GE washing machine, the transmission went out. You might try googling what it's doing plus the make/model of the washer, that's how I found out exactly what's wrong with mine. The machines are so simple it's crazy. After I got the parts it took me less than an hour to fix it.

Apparently the tub seized up causing the motor to spin and making a flat spot in the belt. While it was doing this, the nylon pulley on the motor got so hot it melted.
You can't get just a pulley, it comes on the motor. $135. The belt is $25.
So, it's going to be $160 plus labor and we haven't even figured out why the drum is locked up. So, for around $300 (assuming just minor parts), I can get it fixed.
I'm going to take it to the metal recycle place and dump it off.
Time for a new washer....

Sounds like TeamJacob has the hook up! I'll have to keep that in mind when my washer/dryer goes (Sear Kenmores bought in 1998 and still running)."Self-government won't work without self-discipline." - Paul Harvey

I went out of town for a week one time and the first day gone the wife called saying the washer was full of water. I told her to put the clothes in the dryer and she'd just have to wait. She was wanting a new washer and dryer anyways so when I got home we bought a new front loading washer ($1k )and then a couple months later bought the dryer to match.
the day we replaced the washer I started tinkering with it and found that it was just the belt broke. I got a new belt for next to nothing and fixed it and then sold the washer and dryer to my sister for $500
