Back in 1995-ish I helped another officer on a wreck just like this on I30 near Eastchase. A driver in a truck like a Dr. Pepper truck (cabover style truck with trailer) was not paying attention to construction and rear-ended a car pushing that car into stopped traffic. The driver was trapped and the car caught on fire. The driver could not get out and a friend of mine was first on the scene. My friend tried to get the driver out, and ran to his car to get the little fire extinguisher that we carry. He emptied the extinguisher and I arrived and grabbed mine.

It was like pissing on a forest fire. We tried to get him out, but the fire got so hot my body forced me away. Hearing him scream while being burned alive was one of the worst memories I have. I had recurring nightmares about that for a while after it happened.

It is days like that I wished I was in sales.

EVERYONE who has witnessed that, has said the same thing. Luckily I have not, but have come close in various places. For many, it's the single most worst experience they'll ever have as well. Just terrible.

Yea working for Txdot and being a first responder to accidents hasnt been something I have enjoyed. I still see the image of certain wrecks at times. Ones with kids tear me up.
