  • UTA students/grads....

I'm about to transfer from TCC to UTA with about 55 credits to get a Mechanical Engineering degree. How do the the classes compare in difficulty? I've had some tell me UTA is easier because they don't run it like a high school, like TCC does. I've also had some tell me that UTA is harder and none of the professors assign coursework; your grade is made up of exams only so if you fail one it may be impossible to recover. Any info or opinions are welcome!!

isn't that pretty much the norm for most classes at any college?

At TCC only some of the classes are like that (like my calculus classes). Most professors will give homework that counts as a small percentage of your grade to give you something extra to average in in case you bomb an exam. They also usually replace your lowest exam score with your final exam score, if it's higher.

Lol...uta is much harder. People always take any classes they can at tcc for this fact. There is coursework and it's only enough to drop you a letter grade when you don't do it. Tests make it much harder as well.

I transfered from Midland College to UTA and found the classes to be much harder at UTA. Junior college wasn't much harder than high school with the exception of a couple classes. When I got to UTA I soon learned that I had no idea how to study lol, before that I had always got by with minimal study/homework and still made decent grades.

Eh, it's harder than community college but it's not that bad if you show up every day, study, and take advantage of the easy points (HW, labs, etc) whenever possible.

What discipline are you in? What classes did you consider the hardest?

UTA is a UT branch, and it's no cake walk. Several young people I know (through my kids) applied to UTA because they couldn't get into UT. They were able to transfer to UT/Austin much easier their 2nd year.

That's pretty much the rule no matter where you go.

I graduated in May with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Calculus 2 was a little tough. Kinematics and Dynamics of Machines sucked and so did Dynamic System Modeling & Simulation as well as Intro to Control Systems. The main reason they were difficult was because of the professors... Hullender taught the last two and I can't remember the guy that taught K&D of Machines...

edit: Daejong Kim was the K&D Machines professor...

Yeah, I guess the professor really makes the class. The material is hard to get a grasp of, and the professor can either give you a fighting chance to do well, or try to kick all his/her student's ass by making the course as hard as possible. I'd consider myself somewhat disciplined as far as studying goes so hopefully I'll get through it without going postal, LOL.
