Call the court house and explain that you would like to speak with the judge, and when it would be prudent to do so. Go when they say to, be on time, dress nice (dry cleaned shirt, slacks, nice shoes) and tell him the truth. Don't slant it or give him/her any "woe is me" shit, you might be surprised at what he will do for you.
I was cited for some traffic stuff a week before my mom passed away, I got pretty busy sorting out a lot of her stuff. Totally forgot to take my ticket to my favorite Tarrant County ticket lawyer. Bedford had me on 3 bench warrants within 4 weeks... They were not fucking around, the bailiff was contemplating arresting me on the spot as I was trying to set a court date. He let me go when I agreed to the court date. After explaining to the judge the situation involving my mom (brought a lot of documentation as well), and said I would pay the fine on the speeding as deferred adjudication/had already gotten the car inspected/DL addy updated and wasn't trying to skate, he cleared all 3 bench warrants on the spot. Could have easily cost me $700-$850 that day, I cut a check for $212 and went about my day.
Courtesy and politeness go FAR with a judge.

I was arrested for reckless driving in 2003 and spent 8 hours in Galveston County Jail. Once released, they never threatened to put me in jail until I got a lawyer. My lawyer talked with the ADA and just got $100 fine + court costs, no additional jail time or community service. I had no prior record though, spic & span and was completely agreeable and respectful with the Trooper that arrested me. The lawyer was a fishing buddy of my Dad's, so he didn't charge me anything. However, he did tell me he had about 6 hours invested in my case. Say $150-$200/hour would come to right about $1200. I'd talk with a couple different attorney's and see what they say as well.
Car pulled out in front of me......I geared down into 2nd to scream by him and scare him with my exhaust note....Continued to keep my foot in it to show him I wasn't happy......Took a turn "coming In hot" style.....
Police were watching me the whole time. Damn the luck
There is a WHOLE LOT of winning there! I wonder if the person that upset you was thinking..."man where is the cops when you need them".
Tell the judge that you watched "Anger Management" last night!
Seriously though. YOU consider it minimal. Like being able to get a job? Get it cleaned up. In todays work market I don't even look at applications that have a criminal conviction on them.
Even misdemeanors?
Men have become the tools of their tools. -Henry David Thoreau
Hell, I've seen and done worse. Sounds like you ran out of luck about the moment you needed it. I don't think that's something a judge would hang you for. good luck.
So, seriously man get your shit strait, you seem to have a decent head on your shoulders. The longer you keep fucking up the harder the rest of your life will be.
Damn, that is harsh. Makes me glad that I don't have any criminal record. Heck, knock on wood, but I don't even have a speeding ticket.
It's just the job market, nothing personal against them. If I have 2 people with the same set of skills and one has a conviction and the other doesn't, the one without the conviction is going to get the interview.

Yeah, I see the point there. How do you feel about credit ratings? Thinking that is what is killing me.
