  • Colorado nurses sue over time to dress

So, the hospital provides their uniform and they don't have to worry about ruining their scrubs or washing them, but they're still complaining? They should be glad that they don't have to wear the scratchy white one piece nurse dresses, SAS shoes, white stockings, and pinned on hat that my aunt and grandmother wore for years!

Two Colorado nurses have reportedly filed a lawsuit seeking compensation for the time it takes them to put on and take off their hospital scrubs.

The class action lawsuit was filed by two nurses at Aurora Medical Center in Aurora, Colo. Fiore and Lisa Stransky named HealthOne of Denver -- the parent company of Aurora Medical Center -- as the defendant, but they believe more employees of the hospital group both locally and nationwide will join in the lawsuit once their complaint is heard, CBS Denver reports.

As part of their job, the women are required to wear scrubs while on duty. Those scrubs are not allowed to leave the hospital and the process could add 15 minutes to their shift, the lawsuit claims.

"We have to go into a certain area not by the time clock, to find our size, which is not readily available and then change and then go back to the time clock and punch in," Fiore told the station.

The nurses said the policy became an issue when they were written up specifically for attempting to clock in before they changed and for being late to their unit as a result of the scrub change. Attorney Kyle Bachus said 15 minutes doesn't seem like much, but it adds up over the course of a year.

In a statement, HealthOne said it has and "always will look for out for the best interest of our employees, " including compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.

From working shift work for years it's always been "Tough shit. Get to work earlier if it means reporting in on time..."
And it really takes 15min to change and clock out? Riiiiiiiiiiight.

Believe it or not, I actually side with them on this one. They are having to change at work, it is part of the job, they should be on the clock. When I worked at National Semiconductor I had to put on a cleanroom suit and it was a PITA and took a bit, and it's not like I could get dressed at home.

75 minutes a week adds up. I'd be pissed too.

Exactly. It is an action that is required by their employer so it should be paid for.

It also means less time in the kitchen so my opinion may be swayed.

And they have to be AT work to perform that action.

If i was the hospital owner i would immediately change the policy to where the nurses have to provide their own scrubs, and show up to work wearing them. now they are out of pocket for several pairs and have to get dressed at home.. Play hardball lol

It doesn't take 15 minutes to shuck your clothes and throw on a pair of scrubs. I had the opposite problem with a girl who worked nights for me in retail. She came from a job at the hospital where she wore scrubs, and our dress code was that we wore the clothes we sold. She would try to clock in on her way in the door, and go in back to change. Our policy was that you clocked in, ready to work. The solution, if she needed more time to get ready, I would move her shift from 5:30 to 6. It worked for a few shifts, but then she started arriving at 6, and would try to clock in and change. She didn't last long.

Bitching whining clock watchers. I've always hated working with people that freaked out about working .1 hour over the designated shift or dropped what they were doing and walked out at 5.

I get dressed for work AND I drive there every day. It is part of the job. Should I be compensated for that time?

Clearly, but a mid 30's guy enjoying the last of his natural erections professing his hardness would pass muster at PSU.

Exactly. It would take them just as long to change at home, plus they have the cost of scrubs (being tall, mine ran $60/pair,) and maintenance of scrubs. They're saving time and money with the luxury of not doing anything other than changing into their clothes. It all boils down to time management.
