How small is that back yard? Get them in an open field away from stuff. They panic and forget there's a brake because there are obstacles everywhere from the looks of it. Don't forget that kids are like little drunk people...

Nah, not at all. I am thinking it's more of the area I had to ride. Looking at the pics again, I see that it's one small area to ride in. In that situation, I probably would have destroyed the back yard too.

If not even 7, then yeah, feel free to crash away.

its a decent size yard for a subdivision but the first time my daughter rode it she flipped in an open field I figured it would be fine since i turned it down to a crawl

I did the same thing the first time I got on our mini-bike (sometime around 2nd grade). It was a lot faster than our go-kart and it took off so quick that I went into a bit of a mental lockdown (just froze and held on). I went hauling ass across a field and came off after going over a big hump. My dad ran over, brushed me off, explained what I did wrong and I got on back and never looked back.

The trick is getting them to comprehend throttle control...

No, they have to learn how it works and reacts before having to deal with obstacles. Dont let the fact the you think driving is easy cloud your judgement. They aren't ready to face the obstacles yet because the have no frame of reference for how the vehicle will respond. Once they understand the controls, they will use them intelligently. Otherwise they will just panic.
