About 2 months ago I got arrested for reckless driving.
I was hauling ass acting like a dipshit, came around a corner sideways and saw an officer so I pulled over before he even had his lights on. I knew I fucked up and saw him making a u-turn.
I pull into a parking lot and kill my car, give the officer my information and another officer pulls up and asked me "why were you running, why were you trying to hide?" I dont know what he was talking about, but I remained very coropative and couteous the entire time. Replied with yes sirs and no sirs the entire time and never once got an attitude.
He thought I was running because I was going 70 in a 35, and said I was hiding because I pulled into a parking lot. Mind you, this isn't the officer I saw do a u-turn this is another one from back down the road. He claimed he was "chasing" me but never had his light on. Which is why they didn't charge me with evading, just reckless driving.
I spent 15 hours in jail, $2500 bond, my car was impounded aswell.
I have never been in trouble like this before, and I'm not sure what to do. All I've ever had was some minor traffic tickets for speeding 70 in a 55 type stuff.
Everyone I talk to is surprised they tool me to jail instead of a ticket. Is that normal?
I still have not received a letter for a court date, they told me it would be within 2 weeks.
My question is, what is the normal punishment and should I lawyer up?
It's a class b, $200 maximum fine/ 30 days in jail.
I know there will be people who are going to talk shit, but I'm honestly asking for advise.
