It is not just up North...It is the Generation that is joining the workforce these days. We are seeing the same thing at work these days. The new Generation does not wanna work OT and when talking to them you have to be "sensitive" to them. We have already been talked to at work with more training about it in the future...

Working at the gym that I work at has opened my eyes to just how lazy people can be. Texas is a "right to hire, right to fire" state but since corporate is based in California where inadequacy is accepted it has blown my mind how shitty employees can be. My department manager literally sits around for 6 out of her 8 hour shift. I've brought it up to the head manager and he's said that he sees it but there's not much he can do. He brought it up to corporate and they won't fire her but are apparently telling her that they want to transfer her to Houston. Seriously, the only way to get fired is to just not show up for 3 days straight or get caught stealing. This girl makes a base salary of $40k with a potential $2,000 bonus a month and doesn't do anything. It pisses me off so much. I'm not gonna say that I work my ass off, but I make sure that shit gets done and I make half of that.
Working where I do makes me understand why Cali's economy is so horrible. Even if I fuck up, my boss won't talk to me about it. It's done through a coaching report which literally means jack shit."Any dog under 50lbs is a cat and cats are pointless." - Ron Swanson

The jokers at my current employer sat me down at the end of my workday on Friday. While they claimed it wasn't a written warning it was on paper and all signed and I got a copy. After their constant desire for me and others to hurry and keep the hours down, the reason i got reprimanded because I have failed to stop down and call in at 2 pm every day. I emphasized that it wasn't that I didn't want to call but it wasn't my top priority. Safe driving and providing superior service to our customers seemed more important to me. In my best a$$ kissing I emphasized that it wouldn't happen again. This along with their displeasure that I didn't make and submit a copy of my route sheet before I left to deliver. I told them that it didn't always get run in the order I wrote down due to unforseen circumstances. I did my very best to keep my mouth shut and just acted concerned. I can guarantee I will take the time to perform these obviously critical tasks as I am paid by the hour. That and tap the brakes on this hurried pace as they seem to not really care about that if they are wasting time with a sitdown on Friday night. I do the on call thing every five weeks but this is a day job that pays ok so ill try to keep my views to myself and keep collecting the pay. Lazy, not so much but I ain't nobody's "boy" no mater what they may think. Two jobs ago paid real well but I am not travelling, no mater the pay. I told them at the interview and again the day they let me go. North Dakota in January is not happening with me for any amount short of half a million a year and I wasn't makeing anything close to that. That manager didn't seem to understand that I wasn't going no matter his threats. What a tool he is.Rich

I work for a very good oilfield service and supply company, one of the larger ones. We cannot keep people because they don't want to work past 5:30, or be on call. We have had 6 people quit within 2 weeks because of those 2 very reasons. In fact the state road authority here does not work at night either, so all the road construction is done during the day and they are you guessed it "UNION." When I worked in Texas as a service tech for an O&G Service company I was on call 7 days a week and averaged 80 hours a week. I knew about it before I started, and I stuck with it. Money was good too. People complain about jobs, but then they don't want to work for the dollar. It's no wonder why all of the Oil and Gas industry has to get people to move here from Texas, and Louisianna, etc. No one here has any fucking work ethic. Rant off...
A lot of of us grew up watch our parents bust their ass and was gone most of the time. Dads gone 7 days a week, not getting home until after supper or even after bedtime. Maybe some (some to most are lazy) people do not want to do this for companies that don't give a rats ass about them. Maybe this generation realizes they can get laid off just as fast as they got hired and don't want to kill themselves in the process.
Why work yourself into a grave for a company your just a number at? Why miss that time away from the most important thing and that's family?
To be honest I don't care to work 60 hours a week. Working 60 hours a week is nothing to brag about really. Just like bragging about never using your vacation, it's a benefit wtf is so special about not using your vacation?Last edited by gripenfelter; 11-21-2011, 08:38 AM.

Also, there is likely a difference in perspective. Many who bemoan this work ethic and their perception of a lack of it in society may not have children or other commitments on the home front.
