I'm not big on 6th street, it's a cluster fuck.
Continental Club or Doc's Motorworks on Congress are pretty laid back places.
If I do go to 6th it's only to go to two places, The Jackalope or Casino El Camino.
No matter what if you are north of the river, and between Mopac and 35, and south of 183, you're in the right location, just drive a block or so and you'll find a bar.
Hula Hut is definately worth checking out during the day on the lake, good food, good drinks, and a great atmosphere.
Drive 30-45 minutes south and get some good BBQ in Lockhart.
For breakfast taco's you can hit up just about any mexican food place in the AM, or try Taco Xpress for the atmosphere, or Juan and a Million for the giant tacos. And for everyone claiming Kerby Lane is soooo great. I've eaten there twice in the last month and honestly I've had better food at Denny's and Ihop.
For late night food hit any food trailer on any corner, there's some really good stuff out there, we ate at a Korean Taco place one night and I was extremely impressed.

Eric is right, Trudy's is really good and there are 4 or maybe 5 of them around town.
I haven't been to Guero's yet, or Texas Chili Parlor, but I plan to, to at least say I have been.
I just got a new copy of Austin Magazine, but haven't had a chance to look at it. It's the best food in Austin edition.

I like Texas Chili Parlor, but it really isn't anything outstanding as far as the food goes. Not BAD, just pretty standard bar food. If you get a chance ask whoever is in charge if they were working there while Tarantino was doing Death Proof. I've heard some pretty hilarious stories when I've been in there. The deck in the movie doesn't even exist, btw, that door they go out of leads to the kitchen. lolz

The original Torchy's Tacos is awesome.
I always hit up Shady Grove when I'm in Austin. It's pretty good, not the best, but I don't feel like I visited the place unless I stop there. Eat outside. When the government pays, the government controls.

Oh and all of the Torchy's down here are great. I haven't had one bad thing there, unless you count their chocolate chip, coconut, cherry cookie things.
