I'm building a stand up bass for my brother for christmas out of an old wine crate. I'm wondering if anyone has done this or does it as hobby as I have some questions.
Thanks,
Darren

My dad has built some of these guitars had some built.. if you want ill pm you his number and maybe he can point you in the right direction to have someone to build the guitar you want...
I appreciate the offer but this is a DIY wine case bass. Only to be valued by the Brother I give it too. Not for it's sound quality, but by the effort used putting it together ;-)

Try out cigar box nation. I've been meaning to build a guitar like those for years and never got around to it. A couple people have made the wine box bass on there.
I put together one of those cardboard numbers, it was tricky getting the tension just right. I can't imagine trying to do it with steel strings, and besides, lots of players use plastic anyhow for rockabilly.

Thanks for the posts guys! The link has already come in REAL handy! I'll get some pics soon. I already have the body and neck done, just trying to figure out how I'm going to get the head and string tie down on the body. (No, I do NOT know the real terms of these things and while I do care, a little, I don't care enough to quote them properly.)
It is coming together rather well. I wish I had done some research first though! I'm having to figure out a way to get the strings to tie to the neck with out having the luxury of being able to run it through the bottom of the body, like shown at http://www.cigarboxnation.com/
Thanks again!

I can't help, but post pics of this Bass when you get it done. Very awesome present.

Getting close to needing hardware. Anyone know where I can score some stupid cheap bass tuning keys? (I think that's what they are called.... The things you turn to tune the strings... lol)

Hell, look on craigslist for a cheap bass, especially one of those that comes with the pretend amp. You should be able to snag one for $25. That will give you tuners, bridge, strings and a pickup all in one shot. And you can include the amp and cord as an extra to really make it shine.
I just gave away a "vintage" crate amp and an actual vintage aria bass that needed help, because I couldn't get anyone to trade anything for it. You never know what you'll find.
Great idea!! Yes, please keep me in mind. I'll be happy to drive, buy beer, etc.
Here's some pics of the progress. (Click for bigger pics)
Keystone can for reference. Sorry, no DP here.

I thought about frets but given the time table and that this is my first one I don't think I'll do them. There's a LOT to do yet as I have to frame the thing in angle since the face of the crate is busted. still need to get strings, tuning keys, a head.... damn there's a lot to these things!!
It's fun though.
