Cherokee or the Subaru. You can get a nice a nice WJ 4x4 with the 4.0HO for your price range although the Subaru's are neat cars. We have a newer Forester and I've had several jeeps. You can't go wrong with either. The Subaru AWD will be easier to get around with in bad weather.

        I picked up a CLEAN '01 4.0 AT Cherokee for $2300.

        Granted it's a 2wd...

Side question: How much is it to convert to 4wd?

          yeah, 2wd XJ's are cheap

converting to 4wd usually won't be worth doing vs. the cost difference between just buying a 4wd heep to begin with

Total pain in the ass when you can throw a rock in any direction and find clean 4x4. Your best bet if you have space, time, and want to stay fairly stock is to buy a complete wreck to get all the small stuff and scrap the junk you don't use.

~12mpg with an auto. ~20mpg with the 5 speed.

well... I know some folkses who report better than that w/ the auto

but the fact that you'll pay an extra thou or two for a clean 5sp vs. auto will pay for some gasolines

I'm going off of a dozen or so that I've dealt with. The 4wd autos are HORRIBLE on gas.

Plus the 5 speed are a crap load faster, less maintenance, less chance of a tranny rebuild in the near future, etc. They're tough to find. I'm buying the next one I find on principle.

Don't get me wrong, I had a decent relationship with the guy who ran my high school. However, that bastard would never buy me a vehicle.

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

I got 19mpg in my 96 XJ 4wd 4.0l auto. Very reliable, 240k, original tranny, and motor when I wrecked it. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one.

                              This would be my order:

                              AWD car:
                              Legacy GT (good luck, though)
WRX that hasn't been ragged out
                              Audi A6
                              Jaguar X-Type

                              SUV:
                              2006+ Explorer
                              Jeep Cherokee
                              Nissan Xterra

                              Small Truck:
                              Ext. Cab, 4.0L Ranger
                              Explorer Sport Trac
4dr. Colorado (might not find much under $10K)

I just sold my 06 audi a6. My bmw 04 545 handled better in the rain and snow than that car did. for it being awd (a6), I wasn't impressed
