I don't know that he can just come after the money legally, other than small claims court, but I personally wouldn't feel good about just keeping it. Especially if the guy has genuinely fallen on hard times, which may explain his disappearance.

If the guy fell on hard times he would have probably come back asked for his $1500 back. I think the most likely explanation is one of three things.

1. Dead
2. Prison
3. Guy was drunk and forgot about purchasing half a jet ski, I'm sure everyone has done that before. I know I learned my lesson about how drinking and ebay don't mix.

BTW, I agree with the suggestion about selling it then withholding any price difference between your agreed upon price and your actual selling price, since that is the actual damage to you.
