  • Social Protocol

Last April I put a Sea Doo up for sale to clear a little more workspace in my garage. A guy wanted to test drive it, so we took it to the lake and I let him ride it. He was only gone for like 10 minutes and came back with a huge smile on his face. On the way back to my house he agreed on my asking price giving me half in cash and said he'd give me the other half when he came to pick it up. 2 weeks later he called to say that his truck broke down and he was going to have to borrow a truck to come get it. Here it is 7 months later, I still have a Sea Doo taking up space and the guys phone is turned off.
My question: what is the etiquette for this situation? I have no problem sending the guy his $ back, or completing the original transaction. Just want to do what's fair. Have tried several times (several ways) of getting in touch with this guy, to no avail.

[Cliffnotes]- guy gave me $1500 and disappeared.... what is social protocol?

it's been 7 months, hold onto the money just to cover your ass, but sell the SeaDoo to someone else for full price.

After 12 months, fuck it. Chalk the 1500 up to a deposit, and after a year of waiting, you applied the 1500 to storage fees for keeping the jetski, then sold it to cover your losses.

I've got the rest to make things right, in his place. Is the Sae Doo still in good condition?

        Sell it

7 months is ridiculous, guy is probably dead.

This is the way to handle it. If you've tried to contact him, then sell it for full price. If he contacts you back after you've sold it but within 12 total months, then give him his money back. If not, it's yours.

more than likely he's incarcerated, prob why no contact and phone is off. Sitting in jail, broke, prob no job when he gets out.....I'm willing to bet he comes knocking.

He's been to your house, and presumably has your phone #. If he still wanted it, he would have found a way to let you know in 7 months.

if he does, just tell him "a buddy of your's showed up with the other half of the money so I gave him the jetski. He said you were cool with it"

Sell it, and send back the deposit minus the difference if you don't get what he offered.

I don't know that he can just come after the money legally, other than small claims court, but I personally wouldn't feel good about just keeping it. Especially if the guy has genuinely fallen on hard times, which may explain his disappearance.

Drop it into a CD and forget about it? In the meantime, sell the SeaDoo to someone else.
