In Europe, the credit cards use a smart chip instead of rfid or magnetic stripe. I have heard that one of the reason we don't use smart chips here is because of the cost to replace the current cc reading equipment.

Thankfully, I've got an older passport that doesn't have one, but the kids' all have them. In order for the foil to work, it must have an insulated coating around it before the aluminum... if you're going for the true Faraday effect.

Just microwave it for ~30 seconds, it'll kill the chip. And yes, I microwaved my passport, little did I know it had the RFID chip in it. It's in the back cover, BTW.
