  • Organ donation

When my brother passed away we'd agreed as a family that anything that could be harvested and used to help someone in need should be and felt we did right by him and our grief by doing so. Since that time, i've been a donor but also had a living will for fear of being seen as a box of spare parts. (illogical i know, but fear is rarely rational)

However, i've been dating a nurse who works in an area ICU and I am at best on the fence about it now after hearing the stories of people recieving new organs and immediately continuing the bahavior that led to the transpant in the first place. I'd always been a realist that those type of people existed but i was astounded to find out how common it was and how blase people too what i consider to be a supreme gift.

Are you an organ donor? Why or why not?

(ive got my own thoughts, both for and against, just curious if others are also sitting on the fence or have lept to one side or another. Im particularly interested in opinions from those in the medical field)

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

Same with me. Once (and only after) I'm gone, folks can have whatever is left that is any good.

Same here. What good are my parts going to do rotting in a wooden box in the ground? Might as well let someone else use them for a while. If they can prolong a few lives I'm happy to let them be harvested. I would sure as hell want to be on the receiving side of an organ donation if ever needed.

Yes, I am. I have been on the transplant floor a few times and I have seen some real sketchy people that make me wonder, but then I just have to turn back to my focus. My Mom. If everyone judged off of a bad apple here and there she would never have a chance. We've been waiting 6 years now, but I know it's just not her time so we will continue waiting.

Yes. I will not need any of my parts after I'm gone.

I'm not registered, but my family knows they can do whatever they choose when the time comes, with the exception of letting me live life as a vegetable.

Yes. There is always going to be the chance your organs go to a bad apple but not donating means there is zero chance of my organs giving a young child or just general good person a chance at many more years of a good life.

Fuck donation. I've asked my family to post them for sale on craigslist.

Yes. My dad had a heart transplant in 88.

No. I have this paranoia that if I am listed as a donor and I have some moderately serious shit happen, they might not give their best efforts to save my ass.
