  • Liability or full coverage?

So my oldest gets his license any day now, and I'm going to have to make the call to get either full coverage on the 1997 F150, or just stay with liabilty.

My concern is that if someone without insurance hits him, I don't want to loose a nice truck. Kelly Blue Book lists it at about $2,500 but I have a new engine, rebuilt transmission, wheels/tires, tint, etc. in the truck. I have a total investment of about $5k.

If I insure it fully, will I come out even if someone hits him and it is "totalled"?

What do you guys with driving teenagers do, liabilty or full coverage?

Collision will drain the bank. I would go with Liab + Comp and UMBI/UMPD.

Insurance doesn't care how much you have in it. With it being "worth" 2500, I would get liability.

Full coverage does not cover an uninsured driver unless you add under/underinsured to the policy.

Liability with $1m limit. Full coverage has got to cost a ton for a male teenager and generally speaking a kid is going to likely beat the shit out of the truck anyways. The money saved every month could go towards the major repairs.

I'd put that truck on liability. What is the difference in premium? If it exceeds the value of the truck in the time period you expect him to be on your insurance I don't see how it would make much sense. Assuming he doesn't wreck the truck, you could have replaced it with the difference in premiums.

X2 By the time you pay the deductible, the payout is going to be less than what you'd save if he makes it a year without a claim.

i'm in the same boat...my daughter will have her license in about 3-months. i'm considering buying her a new '11 base model truck and getting full coverage or possibly buying a used car and get liability only. i haven't talked to my insurance company yet, but i'm guessing it's going to be ridiculously expensive.

If it's any consolation I paid $320/month on my 96 GT when I turned 16 on full coverage with a $500 deductible.

Not looking forward to this at all. My kids are going to have to pay their own insurance.

Not true. Collision will pay out (you pay deductible) and they subrogate and try to get your deductible back to you. UMBI/UMPD is a uniform coverage and is fairly inexpensive. Only risk-based on previous years claims in that region.

I have never had an insurance company pay anything but the trade value on a vehicle. And I've been deep into those arguments. I even sat on a settlement for 1.5 years before they came to my figure.

It is not worth it on a vehicle valued at 2500.

You bought him a cheap truck in the event he wrecked it there wouldn't be a huge loss. Keep with your plan and don't burn extra money on it.
