I'd advise getting a DD guys.

Tina Resse thinks of everything she could have done to prevent her son from getting killed by a drunk driver in September. She could have sped up in the intersection or left work later, she said.

The Arlington mother was three blocks from the family home at 5 p.m. when a drunk driver ran a stop sign, sending both to the hospital, critically injured. He was charged with intoxication manslaughter.

This fall, Arlington police have seen a spike in the number of traffic fatalities and starting to think like Reese, about everything they could do to prevent deaths of innocent people like T.J.

The department has implemented a DWI task force that became effective Halloween and will run through Jan. 1, 2012.

So far in 2011, there have been 33 fatalities. The police department estimates that about half of those are alcohol or drug-related. Last month, a total of eight young people died in accidents that police are still investigating as alcohol-related.

Public education and a "no refusal" policy comprise the task force's annual winter plan. This year, however, is different in that there will be an increase in staff, including detectives, patrolling streets in Arlington.

The "no refusal" policy, usually used by police during holiday times, requires that drivers stopped under suspicion of driving under the influence will be required to take a breathalyzer test.

If they refuse, they will be served a search warrant for a blood sample and then taken to a hospital for the procedure, said Sgt. Steve Chao at a press conference Wednesday morning.

The task force has made 31 DWI arrests and obtained eight blood search warrants since Oct. 31.

Chao emphasized the importance of the community doing its part to report suspicions of drunk drivers on the streets and finding designated drivers for loved ones, especially during the holiday season.
"Your decision might save someone's life," Chao said.

Reese, still in a neck brace, and with no apology from the driver, is speaking out in public to encourage the public to think of all of the consequences of driving under the influence -- including the consequences for the victims.
"If people would think before getting in the car after drinking, about what it could do to a family," Reese said. "They'd think twice."
              Arlington traffic fatalities
              2011: 33
              2010: 20
              2009: 31
              2008: 28
              2007:23
              2006: 30
              2005: 36

It is estimated that about half of the traffic fatalities in Arlington are alcohol or drug related.

That is another reason why we will be getting a room and having a cab do our driving to and from the party.

Tip your cabbies!! They just might save a life that night.

Why not go all out and get a full blown police escort? The cops in FL get to drive their squad cars to off duty events, why not here in TX?

I'm waiting til Jimmy leaves, then calling in his license plate as a drunk driver, then waiting about 15 minutes and driving...
