So after class I went to run a few errands. After my first two stops I'm headed off to get some go go juice. Sitting at the red light which eventually turns green and as it does I shift into first. Well I thought I did, but quickly realized I was wrong. Pushing the clutch in I realized that my cable tore and now I'm the asshole at the redlight. Yah that guy you know the one that chooses to break down at the most unconventional time. Thankfully it wasn't hot and I'm now sitting at a gas station.

2. Put car in 1st gear
3 Depress clutch pedal, as most switches attach to the pedal, not the transmission
4 start car
5 ???
6 PROFIT!
Edit: Some proactive driving to ensure you don't get caught at a red light and all should be well.

Regardless, I'm pretty sure that your suggestion to start it won't work. With it in 1st gear, and no clutch, the starter will have to force the car forward, while trying to spin the flywheel, no way is it going to go fast enough to start the car. You'll soon be without a starter motor, or a clutch.
