as some/all of you know, i moved to VA in 08 to work. well, my dad just called me and said the guy he hired to replace me quit and his last day was the last day of the month. well, he offered me the job back with the chance of being parts manager. i would really like the job as i liked it there, but, i like my job here too. ofcourse, i would be making about 1 grand less then my wife and i make here. so, if i am close on the figures, we would make about 3 grand more a month up there then we do here. i know for a fact i have the opportunity to make more money up there, but the cost of living is also more up there. just curious what you guys thoughts are on it. it ultimately is our dicision, so we really need to talk about it.

    You live in VA now.

    Where is your wife?

If your wife is in TX, move back.

If you wife is in VA, does she have a job lined up in TX?

$3k more a month = $2k more a month take home. Subtract cost of living, cost to move, etc - I don't think it would be as much as you think....

      Also factor in benefits, etc.

Personally, making more isn't always better. I made great money in Seattle but hated it.

      Don't move for the money.

What job would you be happier with in the long run as long as both jobs will support you financially?

i figured the taxes already, but i do know that cost of living, daycare and ins will be more. i was living there and my family living here and i was paying for both out of my pay up there.

Always remember to factor in cost of living also. Making less in Texas may mean living better....

well, i think i would be happier working up there, but would really miss home. that's why my wife and i need to really talk about it, in depth.

They are both in Texas right now. He was there, away from his wife I believe, but already came back. So he's saying that he alone would be making almost what they make combined here, then once she starts working there her income woudl be the extra $3k a month.

J - That's a tough one. I doubt the cost of living will be $2k more than here a month, so you will definitely come out ahead financially. The main thing I would be sure about is that it will be long term. With your kids getting older moving from state to state could adversly effect them.

Craig, that first part is correct. as for moving, if we do this, it's a done deal, i hated moving all over north Texas when i was growing up and don't want my boys doing that. i do know that the cost of living in Greenville is cheaper then it is in Dallas. we are paying $625 a month for a 3 bedroom house and when i was in VA last, a 2 bedroom apartment was $1200 a month. and daycare, for my 4 year old would be about $700-900 a month up there. there is alot to weigh out for us, that's for sure.

Is there a state income tax in VA?

                    EDIT: It's 5.75%, if the position pays 30 k a year that's 1725 taken annually.

i personally would never work with family, with that said i would do what has been said already, take the job you would be happier with and there would be potential to grow and make more

edit: if you left once already you left for a reason

But as a home owner in TX you get stuck at least that on property tax, if not higher.

Well, that has come up at our house too. I have been talked to outside where I work now about work out of state, or even some that were in state, but would require a move. The only way I would consider something like that would be:

                            A) to a place my wife and I want to live in or around

                            B) pay is enough to be able to move and not HAVE to have two incomes right away. My wife is a teacher, so the majority of the time she is going to be doing job changes during the summer. If we are going out of state, she would generally have to recertify. Some states will allow a grace peroid, some wont. That is a big factor for income.

I know you were there, and assumingly have some relatives and some friends there already. That is a big help, but the rest of the familiy is going to start fresh. It may be an issue of wage and money for you, but for them it will be an emotional choice. Tread lightly there, sometimes those wounds take a very long time to heal.
