Anyway those cameras are both pretty close as far as spec, price, and bundle. They will have a few small different features than the other and the controls will be different. So they only variable really, is you. Id go to best buy or camera store and play with both of them. Mess with the controls, zoom then lens in and out etc. Its basiclly going to come down to you nitpicking minor things. I have had a Nikon D40x, and I currently have a Canon Rebel T2i. Canon and Nikon both make good cameras and one will not take a better picture than the other. Have fun man!
I wouldn't look specifically at what brand to buy with the two you have listed, they're pretty much the same camera. You should be looking at the lens each maker offers, what lenses you might want later on, and what those lenses cost as it may play into your decision. If you don't care about the camera itself and just want something for that price then I wouldn't choose either of them. For what I typically shoot, Canon lenses appeal more to me, so I've always been partial to Canon.

He will spend the rest of the day wondering if he is gay.

So what would be a good general use lens? I'm not looking into anything high speed sports photography, more for stills, close ups, baby pics, etc.
