I like VW's and have had a MKIV and a MKVI GTI. I would stay away from high mileage MkIV's, lots of constant electrical issues, coil packs, mass air sensors, etc. etc. The 1.8t is a great engine if maintained, but the timing belts and water pump need to be changed every 60k or it is boom bitch and it is everything attached to the engine that start becoming issues as the miles rack up.

I had an '04 GLI for 6 years. Was a great car until the timing belt gave out, takin the motor with it. After the motor was replaced, it was never the same. Constant problems after that.

This. MkIV's just get finnicky in the higher mileage ranges. I wouldn't hesitate on an MkV or MkVI, though.
