  • Business Degree

I know a few of you have them. What school did you go to or who do you recommend for a Business degree?

    BBA in finance, North Texas

I liked North Texas but it was a commuter school. If I was going to go to a business school here in the metro I would say UNT is decent. SMU isn't bad if you can get over the cost, a degree from there put you in a clique you may not enjoy but it can lead to connections. If you are going to stay in the state but leave the metro then UT all the way.

Al P is right about SMU and connections. A few guys in my company went there and anywhere we go they run into former classmates (business lunches, happy hours, etc.)

<--- Economics B.S. and M.A. from SMU. I would recommend SMU, but don't get the cookie cutter BBA. Instead specialize in something and it will pay off a lot better after graduation.

Whatever you do, get a useful degree. Read: not management.

I'd hate to even know what a degree from SMU would cost. But all the pussy running around that place just might be a good trade off.

Such as? Can you give some examples?

I say this now (not really sure) but I am not worried about the cost. My employer would (I hope) pick up the bill.

It is cyclical though, ten years ago accounting would get you little. I got offered an audit job at a big 5 firm out of school and it paid $28K. Now it is over double that.

In state? Texas, Texas A&M, or SMU. What do you want to do?

Something along the lines of this. Just my two cents, but get a degree in something you need to go to school to learn. An accounting degree is probably the most versatile undergrad degree you can get, but I'm a little biased there.

If you're just looking for a degree to have one, I'd look to get a finance or economics degree and take as many accounting classes as I could possibly squeeze in.

I just signed an offer for right at about double that. SOX has pretty much made accounting a full-employment field.

Then I would absolutely say SMU. It's an undergrad degree; people can stress the quality of an undergrad business degree all they want, but it really doesn't matter where you go once you reach a certain point. But if you can get part or all of it covered, I'd say SMU in a heartbeat.

No doubt, I think it is going to end up pushing salaries for all business degrees up because more people are going to go into accounting.

This is good information. Because to be quite honest I was leaning towards the management route. Something to ponder now.
