my '05 dodge 4x4 sb qc 5.9 cummins averaged around 18.5mpg...on the highway, if i drove it really conservatively at 60ish mph, etc., i could get over 20mpg...that's about all i could get out of it, though. my grandfather has an '03 long bed qc cummins and gets 23ish on the highway.

also, when i was averaging 18.5mpg, my overhead computer showed 22.3mpg...those things are a joke.

for that matter, my computer on the '11 f250 shows about 1 - 1.5 mpg higher than what i'm actually getting.

Look into the 06-08 half ton rams with the MDS hemi. I routinely see 16mpg in mixed driving, and can see 20-21 on the hwy if stay at 70mph.

our new 2010 does a little better as it has 3.55's instead of 3.92's like mine.

Don't know if it will tow the animal trailer like you want later on but it's not much better than that dak...which can't to but 2000lbs because of the driveshaft.

      good luck though!

My old 06 Megacab 5.9 did a consistent 20mpg... most I ever say was 22mpg and worst was 17mpg. Not bad for a 8000lb truck

I have no issues with the cummins power plant however the truck does tend to fall apart around it . Since I won't be pulling over about 8000# with it and it won't be real often , what do yall think of a gear change to 3.08 ish ?What are the best years to hunt for when looking for mileage cooter? And can they be tuned for fuel economy?

I sadly need to sell my 2003 F-350 dually 7.3 PS. to get out from a house I don't need anymore. I'm thinking 10k. 193 on the clock. It avg 18.5mpg. It's a 6 speed manual aka 5 speed with a granny gear!

I had always heard this about Dodge, but after having 3 of them as oil field work trucks it is flat out not true. We have had 2 2005 2500's and one 03 3500 crew cabs with a 5.9 and beat to hell by employees on rough roads for somewhere between 150-230k miles. All three trucks have held up just as well as our GM and Ford trucks in fact they have less squeaks and rattles then several of the GM trucks.

                it's ignorance...

My mega has 100k miles without a single problem. Never went back to a dealership since it was bought. My other 06 has 50k miles on it when I traded it and never had a problem. My 04.5 had 40k miles on it when I traded it for the 06 and had a computer reflash that was done when I had it in for an oilchange as part of a TSB

My 2005 quad cab 5.9 with auto gets right at 19.7 mpg in mostly city driving. Interestingly enough the overhead console used to be a little off until I went with a taller tire and now it is pretty much accurate versus hand calculation. this is a truck with 91K miles and a bully dog box.

I have also heard the same stuff about Dodge trucks and I really haven't had any problems except for the flapper door in the dash which the stealership fixed under warranty and mirror on the sunvisor that my wife broke.

i've been looking for a decent priced used one for my daughter. if you find one, it either has 300k miles or they want a mint for it!

Been down that road as well, 06 Vette loved the car but it did have a couple of irritating squeaks and noises, traded it at 40k miles.
