  • Thinkin about diesel

I drive 50 miles to work 90% highway. And the dakota gets about 15 mpg , my civic gets about 40mpg. I'm lookin for something crewcab that gets something in the middle . 4wd isn't important but reliability and mileage is . My girls will be raising sheep next year and if all goes well calfs the next . I've had buddy's tell me thier 5.9 cummins hit 30mpg ! Are they more full of shit than normal? The r/t only gets 15 if I baby the shit out of it . The deal is I'm only gonna spend 15k or so to get this . Lmk what y'all think .

Yes...very much full of shit! It's amazing how much the truth is stretched by diesel owners...and especially those with a flavor for Cummins.

Cooter is a better authority on this than I am...but I've owned a number of diesels myself, and a few were 5.9's....they are more typical around 20mpg in my experience....it wasn't uncommon for me to see 23 on long road trips but that was about the best I ever mustered out of mine with a mild tune on it. IMO someone claiming 30mpg was either being towed part of the way or lying.

Worked on cummins for many years and in the older 24 valves I saw 20mpg was pretty common. The common rail 24 valve I never saw much consistency. It was all in how you drove them. Don't trust the overhead display either. Lol. I've seen them saying up to an avg of 40 before.

30 mpg, full of shit IMO... I just sold my common rail cummins and my best average was 22-23 mpg. I did just pick up a 2011 powerstroke, and am wondering what kind of mpg I can get out of it... Hmmmmm

Diesels used to be the hidden gem when they were dead reliable and diesel was 30 cents cheaper than 87 octane. That's when I got hooked on them.
My advice is to buy the cleanest 96-98 12 valve Cummins you can find/afford

The best I ever saw on my 04 was a fluke 26mpg on a trip that I stayed at 65 or so for a tank. Wasn't worth the driving slow. generally I would see 22-23 in highway situations.

Like Forrest said, the benefits of diesels have been largely erased. While I would like to have another I'm just not sure it's worth it. Irony since I work for Cummins

I just can't stay away from them

They're still the best mix of power, fuel mileage, and anti-depreciation in a do-all vehicle

I picked one up Friday as well, put 300 miles on it so far and it's showing 14mpg on the screen. F250 FX4 with the 3.55's. Hopefully it gets a little better, but after having the raptor and getting 12 I'm not complaining lol.

This man speaks the truth....I drove nothing but diesels for years...had 6 in a row up until I traded the last one almost a year ago....I'm really starting to miss having one around now too.

You made the right decision on that 6.4. I really do like the looks of the newer GMs and I'm sold on the LS powerplants.....but we recently looked at some newer Tahoes and Yukons and I was reminded real quickly why I migrated away from GM years ago.....how cheap they are on the inside.
