Nah, bro. We're only human (emergency reposonders included) and it is normal to react the way you do. I'd be questioning you if you didn't have any adverse reactions to the mess that you go out to. I got pretty fucked up on a couple of my calls. I did the next best thing to get away from it and went to Iraq

It's not for everyone, but it's also not for anyone.

it's a noble profession and i tend to demonize it. just cynicism.
A buddy of mine had to respond to some child abuse situation on a fucking clinical ride when he was in school. Apparently these kids were malnourished and the house had shit(literally) everywhere on the floor and was just not a place even fit for an animal. He told me it fucked with his head for a couple weeks. He did however have a pleasant conversation with a homeless dude in the hospital with alcohol poisoning just talking about various malt beverages.

This... If you aren't going to volunteer or put it to use, then it's trivial. You can buy the book to "Learn" the stuff, but I personally wouldn't put the time and money into it just to say "I'm an EMT".

Further, you aren't going to cruise around with a jump bag in your car "just in case", and to actually "practice" as an EMT, you have work under medical direction from a Physician. You can not simply run around and adminsiter drugs and give medical advise.

Yep, it can be tough at times. Kudos to your buddy for keep moving forward.

I had a guy I transported to John Peter Smith thank me and shake my hand on a successful capture of SVT with adenosine in the back of the box. He was very grateful and asked to shake my hand. He thought or felt like he was going to die. I had a successful capture on just the first 6mg push. It was a good and very memorable moment in my EMS career, Always an exhilarating medical call when you turn your head and not look at the monitor when it goes to to asytolye for a brief moment in time. And the patient experiences just a brief moment of lightheadededness and disorientation.

You must have worked for a private service.

As stated above, save your time. About the only thing you can do as a basic is administer a coke and a smile.

                  Yes.

And ignore my previous post. I had a rough weekend and spent the bulk of it at the bottom of a bottle.

I have heard they take a good medic and just totally kill their spirit.

                    Sorry to hear that man.
