I fell victim to blatant affirmative action on time. I was passed up by an employee that was still in training for the entry position. The hiring manager was a brutha; the new guy was a brutha. It didn't even cross my mind to hesitate to march right in his office and ask why I didn't get the promotion for the job that I am already doing in the absence of the supervisor, other than the fact I'm whiter than the palm of his hand and I didn't pledge at Paul Quinn College. I was told I was too valuable where I was. I then reminded him of my pay and asked if that was my value. I then reminded him of everything I've done for the department. I wasn't whining; I was rather explaining my worth with a passion. I knew I was right when he couldn't even look me in the eyes after that. I asked him how did he expect me to utilize my new boss as the resource he needs to be when I, as a subordinate, had to be his resource since I am still training him in the entry level position, let alone the supervisor position that I'm expected to train him in now. I asked if he has questions (which we know he would), if he comes to me, his subordinate, or now is he going to him (the manager). I told him that this wasn't whining, rather a concern as I didn't understand what it would take to advance in the company, as I might be going down the wrong path; maybe wrong work ethic. When I questioned my work practices and work ethic to him, I in turn made it my manager's responsibility to defend MY work. I turned the conversation to him having to explain how I actually do it right. Then the silence was a bit awkward, but satisfying.
I eventually moved up. I didn't go in there to make him give me the job, nor did I expect it. I went in there to make the manager explain to me how he fucked up and leave him to reflect on that while I returned and trained/supported the new guy to be one of the best supervisors that manager ever had.
Shit like that fuels my fire, If you're truely the better candidate and you've been wronged, Maybe it's time to either look somewhere that you do have a fair chance to be placed in the position you belong or realize that this is YOUR store and YOU recognize there is now a weak link in a superior position. If you really care about your work, you can prop up that weak link and insure that failure will not happen and take the gamble that you'll be noticed.
If you sit there and sulk, you're destined for failure all the way around.

To the OP, I don't think there's an easy answer for you as far as how to handle this. I will say that that you are more appealing to other employers if you already have a job. You have a stable job history with elevated levels of responsibility. I don't think it would hurt to at least start looking around.

I was hired at Sears Surplus back in 88 and the manager putnme down as black on the paperwork and I'm white. He said MAG requirements called for a black male to be hired next but he was a redneck white guy and bucked the system. The Co. I work for now only has 1 black employee but they're based out of Alabama....
