This company, or the upper management in this company, is blinded by "equal opportunity" to the point where they have promoted someone unqualified to do the job. Then furthermore they expect someone, which is also a person that also applied for said position and was not selected, to train the unqualified person that did get the promotion. Makes perfect sense in today's corporate America.

It does not hurt to ask, with the motive of "finding out how to improve myself for future promotions that I desire"...type of thing. You can read between the lines and figure shit out quick enough.

You've worked there nine years, and you're still front end manager? I'm sure they've gone through atleast a few assistant managers! Maybe you should try something else. My first job was sacking groceries, stocked groceries shortly after, then assistant grocery manager before I was 18. Truth is, if you're at one position that long, you're probably stuck.
