  • 6.4 is a great motor, and will make a shitload of power. First thing is to get rid of the exhaust cleaning bullshit though!

        That's not what I've heard, my buddies who are ford diesel techs tell me the 6.4L is an awful motor with tons and problems and it's making them a fortune, but they speak highly of the 6.7L

        A lot of conflicting info out there. I personally don't know, GSXRK5 would be a great guy to ask though, he's working on the new powerstrokes.

          Ask your buddies what years of the 6.4's they mostly work on and what job numbers they are. When the 6.4's came out they had flaws from the 6.0. But after the job 2's came out ford and international worked out most of the problems. People bitch about how the cab has to come off the truck to work on the motor but any diesel tech that knows what he is doing can get the cab off in 30-45 mins by himself. Any help will get the cab off faster. So it's really not that big of a deal to get to the motor with a lift.

              Cause of the 6.0. International built one hell of an engine with the 6.4. It might just be the best motor they have built even better then the 7.3. Only time will tell.

              • There is a video that was posted on one of these ford diesel forums I'm trying to look up and it has all the pros and cons on each of the 7.3, 6.0, 6.4 and in that video it says why the 6.4 could be the best motor international built for ford.

                • If you maintain it, it can be a good motor.

                  They still have odd problems, but no where near that of the 6.0 over all.

                  The water separator on the 6.4 sucks, the fuel filter MUST be replaced every 10k miles, the radiator sucks, etc. These aren't 7.3's where you can change the oil every 5k and they will run forever with 50k mile fuel filter changes. I know of a silly amount of the trucks that have had the entire fuel system replaced due to water in the system or lack of fuel filter changes.


                  I also know of a truck that got a shortblock because the two piece block was leaking oil with only 9k miles.

                  Early 08's were terrible. I had one that went to the dealer every 10k miles or so with a dpf problem, and it still wasn't fixed right after replacing the filter two times, different flashes, etc. I traded it in to a ford dealer out of state because I'd feel too guilty selling the POS locally.
