I'm sayin its MUCH easier and cheaper to just go to the pawn shop around the corner and buy it.

Gives new meaning to the words "hot jewelry". That shit is radioactive as a motherfucker.

I didn't say there weren't issues or that it was cheap, merely that it could be done

It would probably be easier and cheaper to just rob Fort Knox.

Mercury+free neutron = radioactive Mercury -> beta decays into Gold

The problem is, neutron sources are hard to come by and cost many $$$

Renting the neutron port at the A&M reactor costs several thousand dollars an hour.
I don't think that would be a problem.

I can build you a fusor, and have a very large piece of beryllium if you want to moderate the neutron stream, you work on getting the mercury isotopes

No where near cost effective to do it right now. Its like pumping oil from the ground at $15 a barrel.

                    already looked into a fusor

they will only fuse several atoms a second

A couple hundred thousand neutrons per second, but I have no idea how to direct them. I was being facetious.

They will outperform point-source neutron generators after decay.

I've heard of miners treating their mercury with thorium, I think it is superstiotion or something but this made me wonder...

My Mom used to do ceramics and I remember she had these tiny little bottles of this "paint" that was 24kt gold. It looked like green Locktite, but after being fired in a kiln, it become 24kt gold plating...supposedly. I just always thought it was interesting.

I was hoping this thread would contain some of this...
