What you hear is true, However, it is not cost effective and takes much longer than 24 hours basically here's what happens:

Mercury+free neutron = radioactive Mercury -> beta decays into Gold

The problem is, neutron sources are hard to come by and cost many $$$

Renting the neutron port at the A&M reactor costs several thousand dollars an hour.

they will only fuse several atoms a second

I've heard of miners treating their mercury with thorium, I think it is superstiotion or something but this made me wonder...

My Mom used to do ceramics and I remember she had these tiny little bottles of this "paint" that was 24kt gold. It looked like green Locktite, but after being fired in a kiln, it become 24kt gold plating...supposedly. I just always thought it was interesting.
